The Definitive Piano Improvisation Course has one goal and that is to get you improvising on the piano. It does this through two separate units. The first is a workbook and two CDs which contain all the sound examples in the book. The second is a set of six DVDs that contain their own set of study.

There is a lot here to like. The workbook opens you up to many different stylistic techniques that you can see and then hear on the CDs. The DVDs contain tons more information that greatly add to the improvisational experience. One thing I really enjoyed was the audio and video quality. It’s some of the best currently offered in a piano lesson home study course.

There was one aspect of the course that I did not enjoy as much. The actual workbook seemed a little rushed and disconnected at times. What more could one really ask for though. The workbook only sits at around 135 pages. This really was not that big of a deal to me since there are six DVDs that are heavily loaded with piano lessons which more than make up for the book.

Lesson Instructions – Yoke Wong does an excellent job presenting the lesson materials. She has a wonderful approach that makes you feel as if she is working directly with you. The DVDs really shine in this course. They are well thought out, very organized, and she thoroughly explains everything.

The book and CDs did not impress me as much but that could have been due to the standard the DVDs set. Overall I was very impressed.

Fun Factor – Yoke Wong really excels here. Her unique style helps keep the mind sharp and interested. She does her duty as a teacher and keeps the lessons informative while steadily moving along. There are not many dull moments here; you’ll be too busy anticipating the next lesson!

Value – I think this piano lesson course holds tremendous value. It’s easy to watch and easy to learn from. There are hours of materials that would take a teacher months too teach. It is one of the higher priced courses out there though. Even then it is well worth the price.
