Gregg Hannon’s Contemporary Gospel Piano DVDs Review
I like saying the words contemporary gospel piano. It just has a smooth sound to it. Gregg Hannon, of GiftedPlayer.com, has a massive DVD set (lessons 1-16) that is all about learning how to create that smooth contemporary gospel piano sound.
The whole system is set up on six DVDs with two-four lessons on each DVD. Each lesson covers a song and reveals specific elements that give the song a contemporary sound. Each lesson is about 30 minutes long and is shot in an overhead view.
I really like the materials presented in the lessons. There are many intermediate and advanced concepts covered in well know worship songs. This is a plus…for me. There is also a boatload of materials covered which again is a plus…for me, but what about everyone else.
This is where the course fails in my opinion. It lacks a methodical system. The concepts are poured out faster than the average pianist can chew. The beginner will often wonder why or how something is being done. Things are further complicated because there are not any chord sheets to go with each song that is taught. This leaves you feeling left behind as each lesson is presented.
This set along with a few bonuses rings in at $197. Is it worth it? Well, yes…and…no. If you consider yourself a beginner then I would not buy this. It will only collect dust on your shelf. If you are an intermediate to advanced pianist then this course will knock your socks off because it is loaded with materials just for you.
Conclusion:
Audio & Video Quality – I’ve seen much better. Improvements could be made.
Rating:

Lesson Materials – The materials are packaged well but the graphics and lack of chord sheets for the lessons seem a little low budget to me.
Rating:

Lesson Instructions – I like Greg Hannon’s personality and voice. He does an excellent job at presenting his materials but the materials are a little unorganized. The instruction received; however, are priceless.
Rating:

Fun Factor – If you can keep up with the pace you’ll have plenty of fun; otherwise, you’ll find yourself frustrated. I also must mention that the camera work is lacking which does have an impact on the fun to some extent.
Rating:

Value – There is a lot of value here if you’re ready for it so I gave it 5 stars here. Make sure you are ready for these lessons before purchasing them.

Gregg Hannon’s Contemporary Gospel Piano Lesson DVDs are very impressive when it comes to the level of instructions delivered but he failed to deliver a system that could easily be followed by anyone. Not only is the instruction hard to follow, the video quality is lacking as well.
These lessons are not for everyone. If you do not already play rather well then this set might just leave you behind. If you are a gospel piano fanatic then these will be pleasing. If you are looking for a challenge then this is it. As always, if you’re addicted to piano lessons, then by all means…get it!
